Biodiversity Importance (Terrestrial)

An indicator of the importance of site's biodiversity in terms of extinction risk reduction, calculated using the species composition of +120,000 vertebrate and tree species, ranging from 0 to 1, with higher values indicating greater importance.

Biodiversity Importance (Marine)

An indicator of the importance of site's biodiversity in terms of extinction risk reduction, calculated using the species composition of +30,000 marine species, ranging from 0 to 1, with higher values indicating greater importance. Based on the distribution and rarity of each species, sites are ranked to have the least species loss. It is a direct indicator of priority areas that should be conserved.

Biodiversity Intanctness

Habitat maps and natural forest distribution data were used to compute the distribution of various natural habitats and artificial environments. Ecosystem integrity was spatially layered by multiplying the obtained spatial layers by a coefficient (MSA value that is 1 for natural conditions and less than 1 if modified: CISL (2020) values were used).

Forest area change

Using satellite image (Landsat) data, changes in global forests (vegetation with a height greater than 5 m) were modelled and projected on a 1-arcsec grid; the difference between the percent forest area in 2000 and the percent in 2020 was calculated.

Human Footprint Increase

An index that integrates a person's pressure on the environment and scores it between 0 and 50. The increase in this value from 2000 to 2019. Geographic data on building construction, population, power infrastructure, farmland, roads, and canals were combined into a single footprint score.

Water Quality Risk

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) represents the quantity of oxygen necessary for the microbial metabolism of organic substances present in water; a value of 2 or less indicates high quality water, such as a mountain stream. Using a global comprehensive dataset of water quality, we used Random Forest to estimate the linkages to environmental factors. Using this learning model, BOD values were projected globally.

Flood Frequency

Created by counting the number of times a flood affected the area between 1985 and 2021.

Drought Possibility

AWARE index: an indicator of how little water is available; a value of 1 indicates that there is as much available water as the global average, while a value of 10 indicates that there is only 1/10th of the global average.
